ENVIRONMENTAL EDUCATION POSITION -
FULL-TIME TEACHER-NATURALIST AND SUMMER CAMP DIRECTOR
The Stony Brook-Millstone Watershed Association is seeking an enthusiastic and motivated person for its award-winning environmental education program at the Buttinger Nature Center. The Nature Center is located on the Watershed Association’s 865-acre nature reserve in Hopewell Township, New Jersey. The reserve includes a 1,500 square foot seasonal Butterfly House, an organic farm, acres of field and forest, a pond, and a portion of the Stony Brook. Nature Center staff conducts approximately 400 programs annually, reaching 10,000 people. Among these ecology-based programs are school field trips, children’s and family programs for the public, teacher workshops, and a summer nature day camp. Programming also includes a community-based initiative and the Trenton Link, which reaches underserved youth in nearby Trenton. Staff includes Director of Education, Nature Center Manager, Teacher-Naturalists, Interns and a dedicated corps of volunteers.
Responsibilities:
- Develop, promote and teach education programs for schools and public
- Conduct pre-season summer camp planning and preparation; including recruitment, interviewing, hiring and training of staff, record keeping, camp curriculum review and supply purchases
- Actively participate in and supervise all aspects of 6-week summer environmental education day camp, including offsite trip supervision
- Maintain existing educational displays in nature center and develop new displays
- Create educational materials for the Association website and trailside kiosks
- Interact with visitors at the Nature Center
- Assist in daily supervision of interns and volunteers
- Perform routine facility maintenance, various office tasks and other projects as needed/assigned
General Qualifications:
- Minimum Bachelor’s degree in environmental education, education, the life sciences or related majors, or equivalent life experience
- Experience working with children in an outdoor educational setting
- Experience working with volunteers and/or interns in a supervisory capacity
- Experience designing environmental education programs
- Prior summer camp work experience, preferably with supervisory responsibilities
- Strong knowledge of natural history
- Good organizational skills; ability to multitask
- Excellent communication skills; written, verbal and listening
- Strong interest and enthusiasm for the environment and desire to share it with children and adults
- Strong spirit of cooperation and teamwork; good sense of humor
- Willingness to learn and participate in all aspects of nature center work
Position starts September 2, 2008 Salary commensurate with experience.

WATERSHED SCIENCE AND MANAGEMENT SUMMER INTERNSHIP
The Stony Brook-Millstone Watershed Association, a dynamic and multifaceted non-profit conservation organization, is seeking a summer intern for its Watershed Management Program.
The successful intern candidate will be professional, responsible, highly organized, and have excellent writing and verbal communication skills. The 2008 Watershed Management Intern will gain valuable event planning, grant administration, and research experience as well as become familiarized with the New Jersey environmental non-profit community.
A background and/or interest in environmental policy, science or business management is preferred. This is an 8 week full-time summer internship.
The Watershed Association is dedicated to preserving clean water and protecting the natural environment in the 265-square mile region of central New Jersey drained by Stony Brook and the Millstone River. The Watershed Association pursues its mission through education, science, advocacy, and land protection. The organization owns and manages an expanding 860-acre nature reserve; operates a nature center and extensive environmental education program; works with towns, citizens, and businesses to improve land management decisions; and conducts stream monitoring and restoration efforts.

DIGITAL GRAPHICS INTERNSHIP OR VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNTIY
The Stony Brook-Millstone Watershed Association, a dynamic and multifaceted non-profit conservation organization, is seeking assistance in organizing, managing and converting their large stores of images and electronic documents.
The Watershed Association is dedicated to protecting clean water and the environment in the 265-square mile region of central New Jersey drained by Stony Brook and the Millstone River. The Association's offices are located on an 860-acre nature reserve. The Association operates a nature center, summer camp, and extensive environmental education program; works with towns, citizens, and businesses to improve land use decisions; and conducts stream monitoring and restoration efforts.
Interns and volunteers will help in converting traditional slides into digital images, organizing and inventorying existing digital image files and converting older electronic documents to a standardized and updated digital format.
Candidates should be comfortable with basic computer operations for the Windows operating system with specific knowledge and skills with one or more of the following applications: Adobe InDesign, Adobe Pagemaker, QuarkXpress, Microsoft Publisher, Microsoft PowerPoint, Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Photoshop Elements, Corel Paint Shop Pro and GNU Image Manipulation Program (GIMP). Familiarity with macro programming or routine automation is a plus.
Great for Information Systems Management, Library Science or Graphics Design students! Internships offer no monetary compensation, only valuable hands-on experience. Working hours are flexible, but program-stipulated hours required for a passing grade will be tracked and reported to your institution. All coop coordination, paperwork and reporting procedures required by your program must be provided to the Watershed Association and completed before starting the internship in order to participate and receive credit.
Volunteers are asked to make a minimal 4 hours per week commitment. Opportunities to assist in the creation of new layouts to build your portfolio and will be allowed to use equipment and programs for personal projects within reason and as time and access permits.

GIS INTERNSHIP OPPORTUNITIES - FALL OPENINGS AVAILABLE
The Stony Brook-Millstone Watershed Association, a dynamic and multifaceted non-profit conservation organization, is seeking Geographic Information System (GIS) interns.
The Watershed Association is dedicated to protecting clean water and the environment in the 265-square mile region of central New Jersey drained by Stony Brook and the Millstone River. The Association's offices are located on an 860-acre nature reserve. The Association operates a nature center, summer camp, and extensive environmental education program; works with towns, citizens, and businesses to improve land use decisions; and conducts stream monitoring and restoration efforts.
GIS interns will help in creating maps to support the Association's programs, organizing existing GIS data sets, gathering new data sets, and maintaining the internet map server for the GIS Center at Stony Brook.
Candidates should be knowledgeable of GIS concepts and have experience with a GIS software package - preferably ESRI ArcGIS, Open-source GRASS or Manifold. Familiarity with environmental science, GIS-based environmental analysis, VBA, Javascript, XML, and HTML is a plus.
The internships offer no monetary compensation, only valuable hands-on experience and training. Working hours are flexible, but a minimal 4 hours per week commitment is preferred.
