A diverse community including two high-density Boroughs and maintaining rural farmland and open spaces, Hopewell Township strives to provide only the best for its residents.  Healthy streams and stream corridors, protected groundwater through proper septic system maintenance, increased infiltration of rainwater into the ground, and a Master Plan that presents these goals and more.  Hopewell Township takes action to create a quality of life desired in many communities.

Some of Hopewell’s accomplishments include:

• Creating a Stream Corridor Ordinance based on the Association’s model ordinance. Recently revamped and awaiting adoption from the Township Committee, the Stream Corridor Ordinance calls for protection of streams and the surrounding corridor.
• Updating educational materials for Septic System Maintenance.  With assistance from the Association, the Township Health Department updated materials for their annual Septic Smart program for homeowners.
• Researching the benefits of Low Impact Development, which can increase the amount of rainwater that returns to the ground and reduce run off on paved surfaces and non-point source pollution in nearby streams.  Using publications and research from the Association, the Township continues to develop plans to implement strategies for achieving this goal.
• Involving citizens and local organizations, including the Association, in the 2000 Master Planning process.  Contact the township clerk to view a copy of the final 2002 Master Plan.
• Nominating streams for Category One status - the highest ranking of stream quality that provides additional state protection when applying protection measures.
• Performing streambank restorations on streams where water quality was impaired.  The Association and volunteers have helped to restore the streams’ quality back to a healthy status. Some of those streams include Baldwins Creek and the Stony Brook.

MUNICIPAL ASSESSMENT

Hopewell Township was the first municipality to join the Association’s Program for Municipal Excellence in September 2000. The Association worked with the Township for many years on various land use planning strategies to achieve their goal of having “a strong economy” while not disrupting the “rural character” of the Township.
